Storyteller and communications strategist
About Joel
Compelling stories are at the center of everything I do. Whether it’s crafting written, audio, or visual media, I seek to capture the human condition to connect with audiences.
Over the last 13 years, I have developed strategic communication skills across journalism and higher education, demonstrating a keen ability to craft content that moves people. I can help organizations, whether in the public or private sectors, achieve their goals through my work in:
Copywriting and editing
Photo and video capture and editing
Strategic messaging
Public, media, and stakeholder relations
Crisis communications
SEO and digital content organization
AI integration
CRM & CMS
Multi-platform social media management
Government expertise
Administrative/executive communication
First-person editorial writing
Public speaking and engagement
More than content development
I love being creative — sitting in the office developing ideas — but I also thrive when working with others.
In Fall 2024, I designed and taught a public relations course at the University of Wyoming and received excellent student reviews. I attempted to make each class engaging, explaining the nuance and consequences of decisions in the PR space. Whenever I explained a concept, theory, or method, I made sure to find a real-world example of that working in the modern world. The Tylonel poisoning example just doesn’t work for people born after the year 2000, folks!
I served as a moderator for the Wyoming PBS 2018 gubernatorial GOP primary debate (which is pretty much our general election for governor in Wyoming). The photo on the left was captured by a reporter-friend just before the fun started. Later in that election cycle, I collaborated with UW’s student government to host and again moderate a general election gubernatorial debate. As the Laramie Boomerang’s managing editor at this time, I also oversaw up to six staff members, oversaw the newsroom budget, completed complex projects, managed crises, wrote editorials, and oversaw the editorial board, and more.
At LCCC, I served as our beloved mascot, Talon, on dozens of occasions over many years. Before LCCC, I hadn’t shown an interest in dressing as a giant bird and performing for crowds, but I wanted to help the college, so I stepped up.
If there’s a task to be done, I want to find a way to do it.
